Buying & Sourcing
If you are time short – or simply don’t have the desire or inclination to negotiate a price with a dealer or bid at auction – we are only too happy to work on your behalf to get the best price and the best outcome. Bidding at auction is a fast-paced and dizzying experience that can often leave you feeling unsure why you lost a piece that you really wanted. With six years working at Christies, we are equipped with the confidence and knowledge to help you buy that perfect piece. We can also help you find specific pieces for your home via our sourcing service.
You’ve successfully bought something beautiful – but how do you get it to its new home? Most dealers and auction houses that we feature can offer you a shipping option and will always provide you with a quote. We are also happy to help – we have a small team of trusted shippers that we have personally used to ship antiques and valuable or bulky items safely to your home, whether it’s an auction lot from Paris, or a piece from a dealer in London – we are happy to impart our knowledge and experience.
No doubt part of the reason you are investing in antique and retro pieces of furniture and art is their patina and age. We would recommend that you do not intensely clean paintings, they will lose their character and may look stark and bleached – but a gentle clean of surface dirt can bring a painting or work or art back to its original glow. A repair job on a beautiful frame or piece of furniture that may bear a deep gash, will not only bring the piece back to it’s best, but also potentially increase its value. We are able to point you in the right direction – including finding specialists that we trust to re-wire lights to UK standards.
Dealers will often re-upholster a piece before they sell it – saving time and hassle. Wonderful if that happens and if the fabric goes with your scheme, however, if that is not the case don’t miss out on updating some fabulous pieces of furniture. Chesterfield sofas come up fairly frequently at auction – and they are a timeless classic – let us advise you on fabrics, colours and someone who will re-upholster to a high specification. If not treated, leather pieces often crack and chap in dry conditions or in sunlight – again we can advise on lovingly restoring your piece.
